50mething – Free To Go (2026)

At almost 60 years of age, singer-songwriter 50mething says he’s “…been around the block a couple of times…” experiencing life in all its grit and glory. The one conclusion reached: “All you can do is keep pushing on.” Using music as a conduit, unpicking human experience in an intimate, powerful way, 50mething connects with audiences regardless of their age, creed, culture, or any other difference, really. Drawing from various influences, the UK-based artist’s music embodies raw authenticity and originality, standing out in the music industry; I suppose you could call him eclectic. Join us as we listen to his 2026 single, ‘Free To Go’.

Self-recorded and produced, with mixing and mastering by Sefi Carmel, ‘Free To Go’ binds elements of jazz, pop and folk in an obscure brush of music. In the background, lingering drums keep the tempo, while a bold beat pulsates like a heartbeat. Atop, there is a combination of percussion, keyboards and horns – each weaving a kaleidoscopic sonic veil. The brushes, strokes, sweeps and hazy swoons emerging from this plethora of sounds are somewhat off-kilter, but also have an obscure soothing like a refreshing breath of clear air.

For me, the melody is engulfing and emotional, but it is the bold vocals that truly lead the song. Almost spoken-word, 50mething has a conversation with us, speaking about the theme of societal injustice. Strangely, this song explores such a difficult theme while having a soft sound. 50mething explains:

“I try, sometimes, to be a little ambiguous with lyrics. As soon as you mention a “knee on the neck” and “I can’t breathe”, the death of George Floyd springs to everybody’s mind. The track, I feel, has a light touch, almost with a sense of resignation. But maybe there is something else on the other side… I would like to think that the release, not that we have forgotten, will keep in people’s minds the dangerous consequences and injustices out there. That there has to be a better way to apprehend or detain someone without them dying in the process.”
