Noctæra – Never Came To Be (2025)

Bored with the dullness of our everyday rat race with its dissatisfying, tedious nature, singer-songwriter Noctæra turns her head to brighter, more exciting realms without any backwards glances. The aim of her change? To explore new realms of existence with a bright ray of life. Delving into various musical styles, the French artist sees each melody as a “…carefully crafted story…” with each step “…carefully orchestrated to preserve a singular aesthetic that is personal and coherent.” This is my introduction to Noctæra, so I am entirely unsure what to expect. Join me as I jump headfirst without any life-saving vest into her single, ‘Never Came To Be’.

Following the eclectic alternative pop ‘Absensoriel / Alt 4’, ‘Never Came To Be’ shifts from an obscure electronic conversation to a world of pop-rock-filled goodness. Showcasing diversity with each single in her discography, the only constant I could find with Noctæra is to expect the unexpected. Self-recorded and produced, ‘Never Came To Be’ nods its hat at 90s-influenced pop-rock with soaring guitars and crashing drums; however, just as there is old-school instrumentation, a contemporary flush of electronic beats weaves through the melody.

As I mentioned, Noctæra views each song as a separate story or concept; its narrative tells another individual tale like a chapter in a never-ending anthology. ‘Never Came To Be’ charts the course of characters in an adventure with a quest to discover love and each other – but does it actually reach that conclusion? Noctæra explains:

“Behind this medieval adventure lies an interrupted game, and a love that never came to be… Two characters, two players, one connection lost in the middle of a quest that never found its ending.”

Confident and laid-back with a soothing sense of tranquillity, ‘Never Came To Be’ is a song to make you smile with its infectious tune. Yet while mellifluous flow might exist, Noctæra’s vocals insert a sense of melancholy, vulnerability, and poignancy that grabs at your heart and leaves you breathless.
