Lost Lot – Waiting (2025)

From Wilco and The Milk Carton Kids to REM and Bruce Springsteen, Lost Lot draws together elements of rock, indie and country into what might be described as: heavier, denser, rockier, alternative-like Americana. Well, that’s what I consider Lost Lot’s emotionally weighty and hard-hitting brand of alternative country. Hailing from the North East of England, the group, formerly known as Matt Dunbar & The Autonomous Collective, embraces the duality of sound and feeling in their songs, offering music that is anchored and expansive, sensitive and confident, and brash with soothing. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Waiting’.

Following their 2024 singles ‘Different Kind of Heartbreak’ and ‘Home’, ‘Waiting’ leans toward a folk-rock meets indie-folk wash of sound with Americana clinging to the sonic wrapper. Dragging us back a couple of decades, there is a retro feeling to ‘Waiting’ with folk-rock; however, just as the song breathes life into nostalgic memories of early Mumford & Sons, there is a distinctive contemporary edge making it both familiar and fresh.

Recorded and co-produced by Matt Dunbar, Ben Squires, and Matt Dewar (mixing and mastering), ‘Waiting’ is harmonic, rhythmic and brims with the warmth that comes from a beautifully united piece of art. The bold drums move alongside a soaring guitar, dynamic bass, and a twinkling keyboard for just over three minutes of rich music. Yet, as much as ‘Waiting’ is a nice cup of tea in front of the fire, there is a darker, deeper theme enhancing its poignant nature. Lost Lot explains:

“’Waiting’ tells the story of a spirit watching the aftermath of their own death, vowing to guide a loved one through life. Despite its haunting theme, the track is rich with nostalgia and movement – ironically, a perfect driving song.”

Sincere and sentimental with insightful reflection and raw honesty, ‘Waiting’ is the light breaking through the darkness. Sure, the repetition of the line, “I’ll be waiting”, might seem a little eerie, but it is actually about love and hope in the face of loss.
