Moira Chicilo – Poets & The Misfits (2025)

For Moira Chicilo, music is not merely a string of words and lines of sounds put together with pleasing composition. No, for Moira Chicilo, music is a bold creative expression celebrating the push-and-pull of life, the intricacies of human experiences, and the fragility of humanity in all its splendour. With courage and fervour, the Canada-based singer-songwriter sings about powerful topics but uses the simplicity of acoustic folk music to connect with audiences. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Poets & The Misfits’.

In a world of uncertainty, instability, and… well, let’s face it, fear and pain, Moira Chicilo embraces artistic expression as the bright light in a world of darkness. No, not just musicians, but the spectrum of artistry from painters and poets to sculptors, writers and filmmakers. For decades, art has been a defining presence to represent the downtrodden, give a voice to the forgotten, and explore what is missed and dismissed in society. Immediately, Charles Dickens and Banksy come to mind; individuals centuries apart, but these are only two of the brave artists standing out with provocative content. In ‘Poets & The Misfits’, Chicilo pays homage to them all.

Penned by Chicilo and produced with Dan Ponich, ‘Poets & The Misfits’ has the simplicity of a vintage folk-inspired tune. Driven by an acoustic guitar, Chicilo’s intricate finger-picking captures the breath and heartbeat of the melody; however, it is the underlying piano that inserts slightly more warmth, as a fleck of strings brings a kick of haunting from beneath. Showcasing her skilful storytelling, Chicilo’s stark vocals offer an intimate narrative of the poet wanting to make a difference in a cruel world with love, hope and optimism.

“In the song, the image of the poet and the misfits represents the determined spirit found in artistic expression. Throughout history, artists have used their creative outlets to raise awareness and advocate for social, political and environmental causes. ‘Poets & The Misfits’ tells the story of finding the worn-out-worn-down poet in a ragged old café who continues to express ideas and convictions without reserve… ‘Poets & The Misfits’ is a love letter to all the artists who continue to bravely speak the truth in the hope to encourage humanity, justice and social change.” – Moira Chicilo on ‘Poets & The Misfits’
