A Chat with Grizzberg (29.97.25)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Steve Adams, Grizzberg is a new musical project fusing guitars, drums, and flecks of electronica. We speak with Adams about his new EP, Dark Streets, what music means to him, advice and much more.

OSR: Bit of a cliché, but what drew you to music? What inspired you to pursue a career as
a musician?

Grizzberg: Well, this was a long time ago now, in around 1995 (at 14). I wasn’t into music at all until my father bought me a HI-FI! A friend said he had just bought some Oasis CDs so I started to see what all the fuss was about and have not looked back since! About a year later I had my first electric guitar and started to write my own music. I was never great at covering songs, I just had a huge desire to write my own stuff!

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Grizzberg: A variety of Moods. As music is a vibration, a frequency of sound, different moods of the day require different textures of sound, so it’s the sounds that draw us in, isn’t it? So it’s a deep inner feeling, without the risk of sounding corny! But it is simple!

OSR: You recently released your EP Dark Streets. What can you tell us about it? Is there a
particular theme or backstory?

Grizzberg: With Dark Streets, the story of this is that it was a cold October evening in 2024 and i was jamming on my MIDI and allowed the chords to drive me into quite a somber, melancholy like chord progression. The lyrics are simple, but remind me of a cold, tired evening after work. A very simple meaning but as is the monotony of life sometimes, it’s not always high! I always feel my most creative when I’ve had some good stimulation in the daytime. Always typical of a current mood when writing music. I mean you can’t write an uplifting cheery song if you are feeling low.

OSR: I know artists often say that they wouldn’t change anything about their single or
album. If you could change anything about Dark Streets, what would it be and why?

Grizzberg: Hmm, it’s really difficult. If I were to try and change the song, whether add additional lyrics or add an extra layer of guitar, then the dynamic could change a lot and it could never end up finished. Music creation is for one or two moments which characterise a song better than several sessions. The heart and soul of the song can disappear when you try and change even one aspect. It’s all about discipline and knowing when to say it’s complete. Music is like art, never finished but abandoned.

OSR: If you were introducing a listener to your music, which song would you recommend
and why?

Grizzberg: ‘Dark Streets’ would be the one as it’s my latest release and it captures my vocals and several other instruments, so gives a good understanding of where my music is heading now. I’m also very proud of my first release, ‘A Wonder Through Time’, as those three were the first three I wrote under this alias.

OSR: If you had to describe your music in a single sentence, what would the sentence be?

Grizzberg: I’d say my music captures many different areas of the spectrum from raw guitar to electronic, from deep melancholy to bright lush textures.

OSR: Do you have any advice for upcoming musicians?

Grizzberg: Be original, create from what you have inside your labyrinth of a mind because life will always reward those who use their own mind. Always be confident of what you do and accept critique as much as praise.

OSR: What can we expect from Grizzberg in the future? Any tours or upcoming releases
you want to mention?

Grizzberg: No tours, just plenty of studio time at the moment. I’m hoping to release a few more EPs before 2025 is complete, so look out for those!

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Grizzberg: For my music, stay tuned to my SoundCloud page as I’m always updating with new samples of music.
