Jessie Dipper – I’m A Mess (2025)
Known for her poetic storytelling, relatable lyricism, and engaging music, singer-songwriter Jessie Dipper is the friend you call at midnight to rant about whatever or laugh about the other things – maybe both. Hailing from the UK, Dipper’s music has crossed borders, reaching far beyond the UK, having performed in over 15 countries. Her confident stage presence has graced audiences both as part of her band, as a solo artist, and supporting acts like Megan McKenna and Scouting For Girls. When not performing, she balances her artistry as a lecturer in music performance and songwriting.
Take a quick gander at Dipper’s previous work and you’d hear a strong folk meets indie-rock connection; however, the new single, ‘I’m A Mess’, is a pivotal point in her career, stepping away from folk to harder, heavier flavours of rock. Unlike the previous 2025 EP, Nashville Vignettes, ‘I’m A Mess’ is a collision between Mumford & Sons and Radiohead with a kick of Alanis Morissette clinging to the sonic bubble.
Brimming with grit, grunge, and the tumultuous flush of a kaleidoscopic soundscape, listening to ‘I’m A Mess’ is like becoming lost in a whirlpool of head-spinning music where you can’t seem to find any light beyond those twirling walls. Joined by Nathan Warnes on the bass guitar, Owen Benoy on drums, and produced by Dipper, with drum mixing by Nate Orr, the sheer force of the instruments enhances the powerful evolution of Dipper’s style. Is this something to stay? I’m not sure.
While the melody with Dipper’s gruff, “I’m a mess…”, appears chaotic, the song is actually one of empowerment and hope. She explains:
“It’s a song about realising the mess you’re in is okay, and that you’re not alone in it. I hope it becomes an anthem for anyone tired of pretending, of feeling like they have to hold it all together or fit into something polite and polished. There’s power in dropping the act and just being honest.”
In addition to the single, Jessie Dipper released an official music video for ‘I’m A Mess’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
