Mercy Kelly – Speak Too Soon (2025)
With a growing reputation for energetic, confident performances and anthemic, stadium-rocking tunes, UK-based quintet Mercy Kelly are quickly becoming one of the most exciting and refreshing bands in the UK indie scene. Originally formed as an acoustic songwriting partnership between Adam Bridge (lead guitar) and Jack Marland (vocals), the melting pot of music evolved with the gradual addition of Jacob Simpson (rhythm guitar), Joel Buckley (bass) and Leon Hepke (drums). Between that 2019 partnership to the current wave of critical acclaim and accolades, Mercy Kelly are turning heads beyond their UK borders. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Speak Too Soon’.
Following the well-received single ‘Illusions’, ‘Speak Too Soon’ continues the momentum of a growing band making a powerful impact. Produced with acclaimed producer Alex Quinn at Kempston Street Studio in Liverpool, the single is a well-cut, sophisticated piece of work; the result of Quinn’s magical production wand waved over raw melodic charm. The band say that “Alex really pushed us to elevate the song… helped shape ‘Speak Too Soon’ into what we believe is our strongest release yet.”
With the elegance and maturity of Quinn’s contribution, Mercy Kelly might be correct in ‘Speak Too Soon’ being one of their more honed, polished and strongest releases; however, it is not merely the well-defined arrangement that makes the track intriguing. Amidst the golden combination of drums, bass, guitars and Jack Marland’s rich vocals, a lingering sense of vulnerability and raw innocence breathes with a base passion for music.
For me, ‘Speak Too Soon’ is like walking alongside the lads through a misty forest; it might be a little eerie at first, but the harmonic rhythms and kaleidoscopic grooves remove fog with Marland pointing out the butterfly-trimmed light at the end of the path. Dark but light, there is a soothing sensation executed in Mercy Kelly’s symphony.
This is my introduction to Mercy Kelly, and I am eager to hear more. Perhaps an EP or more singles before the end of the year? For now, I’ll content myself with their back catalogue.
In addition to the single, Mercy Kelly released an official music video for ‘Speak Too Soon’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
