Seth Schaeffer – I Found A Monster (2025)
“Music is the only palette I have for the corners of me that need more than I have words for” – a beautiful line on Seth Schaeffer’s Spotify bio, and a wonderful description of the power music has in our lives. Embracing his passion for music at a young age, the US-based Schaeffer played piano before he could speak and has devoted his life to expressing creativity with emotional effect. A film composer for over 20 years, Schaeffer is by no means a newbie in the music world; however, it is only now that he steps from behind the camera and shares his debut single, ‘I Found A Monster’.
Drawing together the talents of Seth Schaeffer, Emily Hatch, Judah Schaeffer, Marco Pescosolido, Nikes Mavridis and Vigilance Brandon, ‘I Found A Monster’ is sophisticated and elegant, yet the ruggedness and emotion of raw passion; a cinematic piece that turns your head with each breath of sound.
Somewhat distorted, the song presents obscurity and experimentalism; however, it is simultaneously a cohesive whole with harmonic bows tying every element together in their off-kilter nature. As if stepping into a wild sonic forest with dark faces peeking behind the trees and the constant gut-wrenching, heart-pounding fear clutching at your soul, ‘I Found A Monster’ is… well, breath-takingly haunting.
Orchestral in a way, the combination of strings and cello glitters at your heel, while synths linger in its underbelly, and the vocals slide across as a whispered guide. Interestingly, while the track is a song of vulnerability and fragility, its eeriness is not overwhelmingly tragic but has the spark of empowerment and hope. Schaeffer explains:
“I’ve been a professional artist my whole adult life, but I realised I was still afraid of judgement. Worried about what others would say if I’m not good enough. I realised the voices I feared from others were really the self-judgement I had for not being good enough. I had built masks to fit in and play a part I knew others liked. ‘I Found A Monster’ is about waking up the truest version of inner self, and loving the hell out of it before it’s too late.”
