Zachary Mason – The Funky Martians (2025)

Skipping across the realms of pop to rock music with fluttering dream-pop fairies and devilish grungy imps following him from field to field, Zachary Mason not only submits to the hazy sonic fields but leads the way in his genre-diverse journey. We came across Mason earlier this year with ‘I Wish Humans Were Made In A Factory’, then continued on the path with ‘Madness Gladness’ – both singles that dove into the complexities of reality and the human mind. Today, he holds out his hand once again to tell us a story of Martians in ‘The Funky Martians’.

Following the well-received singles ‘I Wish Humans Were Made In A Factory’ and ‘Madness Gladness’, ‘The Funky Martians’ combines classic rock with a kaleidoscopic haze of psychedelic, experimental, and spacey-type rock vibes. The second track off his upcoming EP, 5…4…3…2…1… – an album telling the story of mankind fleeing from a devastated Earth – ‘The Funky Martians’ is like the soundtrack to one of those 1980s films about heading off to another planet, finding aliens (although aren’t we the aliens in this situation?), then the awkward interaction before finding that common ground – music. Mason explains:

In this single, released to introduce the EP, a colony ship lands on Mars only to be confronted by some hostile Martians! The song relates with humour how, due to a lucky mistake, the Martians are appeased with funky music…”

Joined by Rose Hill Drive’s Nate Barnes (drums) and Little Big Town’s John Thomasson (bass), ‘The Funky Martians’ retains the heaviness of a classic rock tune with soaring guitars, a bold bass, and dynamic drums keeping the beat like an anchor in this spacey song. I find it particularly interesting that the lyrics are not necessarily sung, but rather spoken, as if someone were narrating the tale of our landing on Mars. Hollow, but full and rich, Mason’s voice echoes across the soundscape while keeping in line with the funky grooves of the instruments.

Curiouser and curiouser, Zachary Mason’s music becomes more intriguing with each peculiar release. I am eager to hear the upcoming EP, but until then, I’m happy to keep ‘The Funky Martians’ on repeat.
