Michellar – September (2025)

2025 has been an exciting year for our team at The Other Side Reviews, discovering more interesting artists and enjoying more releases from old favourites; Michellar (also known as Michelle Bond) is one of the more memorable musicians we have come across over the past months. In March, the US-based singer-songwriter introduced us to her music with the single ‘LOVE EARTH’, and today we’re continuing our journey on her folk-inspired discography with ‘September’. Join us as we make a cup of tea, get a chocolate biscuit, and sit back to enjoy the song.

Following her five-track EP, My Alma Latina, ‘September’ reflects on the emotions, inspirations and influences of changing seasons. As we drift from summer to autumn, the sun disappears, the light fades, and chills start nipping at your toes – each element drawing with it a particular feeling, thought, and memory. Speaking about ‘September’, Michellar shares:

“Fall is a magical time of the year. It is when the light changes and the colors of our surroundings trigger a lot of reflection and introspection. As the air starts to chill, we also reminisce about the summer and all of its glorious moments in the warm sun. ‘September’ is a song that I wrote amidst colorful changes in my surroundings and the memories of all the summers I have had so far.”

A cross-continental collaboration, ‘September’ was created in San Francisco, USA, but the final production was completed in Staffordshire, England by Tobias Wilson. Clinging to her folk music roots, ‘September’ brings the intimacy and poetic lyricism of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor to our ears, but with a contemporary kick and modern vocals.

Simplistic in one way, the tempo and texture of ‘September’ has a barebones flavour, capturing the essence of seasonal changes from warmth to a chill. Yet, the harmonic blending of an acoustic piano, percussion, and guitar floods the track with richness, capturing the emotion of a reflective ballad. Helen Walford’s honey-soaked vocals might not be outstanding in a bombastic roar of sound, but in the delicate softness, she finds and relays the emotional depth of the track.

Sincere, sentimental and tender, ‘September’ is the perfect soundtrack for this time of changing seasons and reflective emotions.
