Vølve – Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser (2025)

Influenced by the likes of Kate Bush, Agnes Obel and Patrick Watson, singer-songwriter Vølve brings an ethereal, otherworldly sound to our ears; the music dancing across our skin, sending chills down our back, and taking our breath away. The brainchild of Danish artist Helene Navne, Vølve is an act inspired by Nordic mythology – a world Navne led people to with her debut, ‘Enter The Unknown’. First, she told the story of a “…goddess playing with the elements, inviting listeners into a world where myth and reality merge…” Today, this rising star in the Scandinavian music scene reaches beyond her Danish borders with ‘Vølvens Sand / Jeg Ser’.

Following her single, ‘Les Trois Amies’, ‘Vølvens Sang /Jeg Ser’ blends elements of folk and dream-pop in a concoction of dark, gothic, alternative, almost avant-garde sensibilities. Performed, composed, penned and produced by Vølve, with mixing and mastering by Peter Reuss, ‘Vølvens Sang /Jeg Ser’ is, well, in a word: otherworldly. It’s cinematic wind of wistful notes floats across a murky floor, while fairies dance across the water, imps peep from behind dark trees, and a light draws you closer through the mire.

The single is connected to “…the myth of Ragnarök and the courage of seeing truth in times of collapse…”, and the shivering music perfectly executes seeing truth – the bright light – within dark times – the murky swamp. To enhance the sense of eeriness, Vølve adds an orchestral element to the synths and drums. Piano and cello weave through the soundscape, contributing to the subdued instrumentation. Interestingly, while the instruments push a melody of haunting, it is Vølve’s vocals that up the ante as a “…prophetic voice rising through…ritualistic intensity…”

Overall, what are my thoughts on Vølve and ‘Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser’? On one hand, calm and soothing with a lingering sense of languidness, but a sense of unease burns in the tranquillity, offering a song that is both light and dark, warm and cold, creepy and comfortable. It’s clear to see why Vølve is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing artists in the Scandinavian music scene… and beyond.
