Allan Jamisen – All I Am Is You (2025)

A regular feature on The Other Side Reviews, singer-songwriter and painter Allan Jamisen continues to turn our heads every couple of months with his hard-hitting music. From ‘Rise Above’ to ‘Living The Dream’ and ‘Rock & Roll American’, US-based Jamisen refuses to be labelled, blurring the lines between rock, funk, soul, and electronic tinges woven in his sonic tapestry. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘All I Am Is You’.

Following the well-received ‘Rock & Roll American’, ‘All I Am Is You’ is a concoction of vintage funk, spacey contemporary synths, and an intriguing slide guitar shimmering across the melody. Futuristic in a way, the single seems to drag you into a dark, ethereal, somewhat fearful bubble; an anthem for a dystopian society, ala George Orwell’s 1984. Interestingly, the melody hints at dystopia, yet there is a soulful understanding and awareness slicing through the eeriness.

Produced with long-time collaborator John X Volaitis, the melody is weighty and profound. From the shimmering synths bringing a creepiness to the soundscape to a bold beat pulsating in the background, sort of like a heartbeat pounding with individuality. For me, however, it is the vocals that really drive the tune. Jamisen’s distinctive growl meets melodic backing female vocals nodding toward vintage funk with soulful attitude. An intricate oscillation… no, not an oscillation, more compounded layers of confidence and boldness with vulnerability and fragility, ‘All I Am Is You’ is profound and weighty, while retaining soothing flow with odd languidness.

Melodically, ‘All I Am Is You’ is sophisticated, elegant and complex; however, it is the lyricism and message that up the profoundness ante. An exploration of modern identity in this digital era of uncertainty and chaos, Jamisen explains:

“’All I Am Is You’ is… inspired by Los Angeles, and themes of transference, ego, and collectivist identity reflected back to us through every form of traditional and social media… It’s a funky, electronic combination of sounds… which plays as a commentary of the image-driven, kaleidoscopic view of dystopian life we’re living through in 2025.”
