Eva St Maria – Naive (2025)

The younger sister of American rock band 4 Non Blondes, Irish singer-songwriter Eva St Maria captures the heart of Linda Perry with the flair of Florence Welch in obscure, vintage alternative rock-inspired vocals. With her debut only recently released, no person beyond her live performances quite knows what to expect; however, what we can determine by merely reading up a little is that she’s quite profound, insightful, honest, and intriguing. So, join me as I hit the play button on Eva St Maria’s debut track, ‘Naïve’.

Taken from her upcoming debut EP, Heartache, Baby! – St Maria’s “…ode to the relationships that shape us…” – ‘Naïve’ is a delicate unpicking of the complexities of romantic relationships. Produced with Larry Hogan, the single drags us back to the 90s alternative/indie-rock music scene with an elegant wave of Hogan’s sparkling production wand. Sophisticated and polished, the soaring guitars entwine with a bold drumbeat in a tune that breathes nostalgic life into the sounds of 4 Non Blondes and Fools Garden.

Harmonic and symphonic, ‘Naïve’ is a melodic gem spreading a sense of calm, serenity, and the attitude of one enjoying a relaxing Friday night after a challenging week. Moreover, Eva St Maria’s rich vocals dance across the song, presenting a charming lightness and fairy-like sparkle to ‘Naïve’. Yet, as much as the single is one to let your hair down to, the lyricism is more vulnerable, raw and weighty, but with an empowering light woven into its intricate theme. St Maria explains:

“I wrote ‘Naïve’ after realising I’d spent too long stuck in relationships where I’m receiving breadcrumbs… It’s not a heartbreak song – it’s a wake-up song.”

So, what is my overall opinion of Eva St Maria and her debut single? Honestly, it’s an uplifting melody with a smile-inducing whimsy shimmering across the song. It might unpick the darker side of a relationship, but St Maria’s optimistic vocals and the tenderness in its arrangement really enhance its hopeful message. I highly recommend this artist to anyone, and cannot wait for her upcoming EP.
