As our and your introduction to Kaia Fincher, we’re entirely unsure what to expect from this new artist. So, going in completely blind, it was intriguing to discover the Kaia Fincher sound. Sauntering through the realm of pop, ‘Something New’ is a synth-driven tune combining bold beats, shimmering synths and slicing piano, woven in a synth-pop meets alternative-pop and indie-pop tune. Confident and relaxed with a sincere tranquillity oozing from the melody, ‘Something New’ is a song to chill out to; however, it also tips its hat at human fragility and vulnerability, particularly with Fincher’s angelic vocals.
Aligning itself with the melody, ‘Something New’s lyrics and theme are captured by this wavering between delicate and determined, bold and confused, fearful and resilient. Fincher explains:
“’Something New’ is about taking that terrifying leap into vulnerability. I wrote this song when I realised how much time I’ve spent worrying about the future. It’s about staying open, even when it’s scary, and reminding myself, and hopefully anyone listening, that this moment matters too. I hope this song gives people a little spark to stay present.”
So, my overall opinion of Kaia Fincher and ‘Something New’? A spark between vintage and contemporary synth-pop, Fincher’s single transcends generations with a charming sound and timeless theme. I truly enjoy ‘Something New’, but I am concerned that this debut is the best of Fincher. Will she peak with her first song? I hope not.
