Dan Gober – My October Rose (2025)
With over thirty years of making music, singer-songwriter Dan Gober has spent years experimenting, discovering, evolving, and defining a sound that is simultaneously distinctive and reminiscent. The US-based musician began his career in high school, studying music; then, he “hit the ground running” performing solo and as part of a band. Tours and networking built a name and fan base, but it was after a studio recording that Gober set off on “…the endless chase of experimental writing and recording…”
Following his singles ‘Little Bird’ and ‘Lucky Son of a Gun’, ‘My October Rose’ retains the old-school folk-rock tone of the last couple of songs. Yet, there is something slightly different in this track. Joined by his long-time collaborator – and dare we say partner in crime – Buddy Sweets, ‘My October Rose’ is gritty, rugged, and makes you think of those days when you just sit back in reflection of your life. Then again, as much as there is vulnerability and hindsight nature, ‘My October Rose’ is veiled in heart-warming resilience – so, you might look at the bad sh*t but also see the silver lining running through the experiences and forward toward a light at the end of that proverbial tunnel.
Sparse and barebones, the mellifluous flow of guitars, drums and percussion winds harmoniously around you. Each brings a specific flavour with their presence, but still joins in a hauntingly harmonic melody. Melodically, the song is stirring, but it is the lyrics that really add weight. Gober explains:
“While ‘My October Rose’ is deeply personal, it’s built on universal emotions and themes that many people can connect with. Here’s how others can relate to it: whether it’s a mother, partner, friend, sister or even mentor – everyone has (or longs for) that one person who keeps them grounded during chaos. Someone strong, quiet, and beautiful in their own way. Autumn is symbolic of change, reflection, ageing, and letting go, but also warmth, romance and beauty in impermanence…”
In addition to the single, Dan Gober released an official music video for ‘My October Rose’. You can view it below and/or on his YouTube channel.
