Track of the Day: Laura Dannan – The Sock Song (2025)
With her cheerful grin and charismatic charms, singer-songwriter Laura Dannan can win your heart with melodies, have you chilling to a folk-inspired groove, and have you spending too many hours on YouTube with her YouTube channel – be sure to check out her “A Musical Minute” interviews, my favourite is the one with Rob Green of Toploader. Yet, as much as I’d love to chat about her Drum Quest series, I’m here to take you on a journey through her discography. From her self-taught guitar to inspired drumming and the cheeky winks of her lyricism, Laura Dannan is a ton of fun and mischief. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘The Sock Song’.
Following her well-received single ‘Lullaby’, Dannan releases her acoustic recording of ‘The Sock Song’. Recorded at TileHouse studio by Luke Oldfield, the track is a single, live take that enhances the intimacy, vulnerability, and friendliness of Dannan’s heartfelt music. In ‘The Sock Song’, the UK-based artist amplifies not only her playful attitude, but also connects with audiences on a lighter level – it’s all about losing socks. She explains:
“…in a time of unrest and huge issues at play in our daily lives, I wanted to bring something light-hearted to make you smile. I have a sock issue in my household! I have no idea where they go! So, I wrote a song about it. I’m sure there are some magical sock shenanigans going on.”
Fairy-like and brimming with joy, you can’t help but find yourself singing along and tapping your foot – in an odd pair of socks, perhaps? With a simplistic guitar and vocal arrangement, the track appears barebones and lays everything out in raw lyricism, even tragedy if you will. A conversation instead of purely singing, Dannan shares her torment of disappearing socks that, well, at least I can relate to – it’s like an old friend talking about oddities over a very much needed morning cup of tea.
