Myra Keyes – Foam (2025)
With a couple of EPs, a full-length album, and some singles already up for ears to enjoy, singer-songwriter Myra Keyes has been making a noise (a good noise) since 2022. Hailing from Chicago, the young artist is already turning heads beyond her USA borders; however, this is our introduction, so we’re a little late to the party. With a brief listen to her discography, I can be certain that Keyes discards perfection for raw authenticity in each melody. Join us as we delve into her most recent release, ‘Foam’.
Taken from her upcoming album Signature Move, set for release on October 24th, ‘Foam’ is the standout track, giving us a taste of what Keyes has in store. When speaking about the album itself, Keyes explains: “I wrote this album during my sophomore year of college… You learn a lot about yourself and the world when you’re twenty. Sophomore year was a puzzle of regrets, epiphanies, and learning things the hard way. I wrote most of these songs late at night or when scrambling to record a riff between classes… The album explores the mundane and ordinary and reductant… also sincerity, adjustment, punishment, procrastination, self-sabotage, and impermanence…” ‘Foam’ delves into the realm of sincerity, personal growth, and meeting Keyes’ itch to “…write a weird pop song with catchy drums.”
Ignoring the parameters of traditional indie and pop music, ‘Foams’ is a conglomeration of pop-etched sounds bound within a rock-inspired sonic wrapper. While songs like ‘Sweetsick’ and ‘Apartment Gargoyle’ leaned strongly toward an alternative rock vibe, ‘Foam’ draws together the shimmer of dream-pop with an electronic pop backer and the pulsating drums and soaring guitars of a pop-rock anthem. It’s like heading off on a happy skip, hop and jump in the vast array of pop-flavoured music.
For me, the instrumentation is endearing with an ethereal sheen; however, it is Keyes’ crisp vocals that slice clarity into a whirlpool of wistfulness. If this is anything to go by, I cannot wait for Keyes’ upcoming album.
