Less – Instead of Making Love (Say Hello) (2025)

When I’m confronted with the fact that children born in the 2000s are now adults, it leaves me speechless, shaking my head in disbelief. Born in the 1980s, it seems unbelievable that Gen Zs are all grown up – singer-songwriter Less is one of these “zoomers”. Born in Naples in 2001, Less experienced a nomadic childhood brimming with diversity, but also instilling the value of change and resilience. At the age of 14, she realised her sexuality, leading to familial conflicts; this is when she began using melodies as cathartic solace. With strong narratives, personal experiences, and soul-stirring songs that embrace timeless issues with a contemporary sound, Less is the voice of intimate comfort and vulnerability with universal appeal. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Instead of Making Love (Say Hello)’.

Following her singles ‘I NEED ALL YOUR LOVE’ and ‘UP AND DOWN’, ‘Instead of Making Love (Say Hello)’ is a drag back to the 1990s/2000s alternative rock scene. Joined by producers Lorenzo Santi and Federico Maremmi, the track fuses soaring guitars, bold drums, and slips of keyboards within a kaleidoscopic bubble of sound. Toe-tapping and infectious, you can’t help but sway to the rock-inspired melody. Interestingly, while there are heavy guitar riffs and crashing, pulsating drums, ‘Instead of Making Love (Say Hello)’ finds the balance between heavy, weighty, meaty rock music and light-hearted, twinkling indie tones.

Oscillating between shimmering peaks and challenging depths, Less takes listeners on an emotional melodic journey with the new track. For me, it is not the ebb and flow of music that holds my heart, but rather the dancing of Less’s vocals across the tune. Obscure and slightly off-kilter, her voice presents as a tremulous alto, and it is this deep tone that illuminates the ironic lyricism with calm reflection, sincerity, and emotional introspection.

Sincere, sentimental, and genuine, Less’s originality shines in ‘Instead of Making Love (Say Hello)’, as it does in all of her material. I find this Italian artist intriguing and highly recommend her to any listener. I’m definitely going to keep my eye on this rising star, and I suggest you do too.
