Brian Fire – Idle Idol (2025)
You know that feeling of frustration, anxiety, fear, and inner tension that exists in the void between who you are and who you believe you can become – this is the birthplace of Brian Fire. Raised in a musical world, the US-based musician grew up with classical training, marching bands, and a fascination with melodies. Brian Fire (also known as Brian Garcia) shares, “I’ve always known I was an artist at heart, but it took me years to cross the line from wanting to make music to becoming someone who makes it.” Today, we find him having crossed the line with his new single, ‘Idle Idol’.
Following a five-year gap between his sophomore single in 2020, ‘Losing Control’, and the 2025 track, ‘Let Go’, Fire takes a second step into this year with ‘Idle Idol’. Once again transporting listeners back to the 1980s pop realm, ‘Idle Idol’ is a shimmering sonic tapestry of vintage pop with an echo of Duran Duran and the Pet Shop Boys. Unlike ‘Let Go’s upbeat, energetic rush of synths, the new single adopts a slower, steadier, although just as whimsical vibe.
Co-produced with Ryan Dulude and Damon Moon, ‘Idle Idol’ entwines shimmering keys with a bold drumbeat and a dynamic bass, offering an indie-pop element to the melody. For me, it is not the wave of kaleidoscopic music that ups the ante – it is Brian Fire’s rich vocals. Dancing across the well-crafted tune, there is warmth and heart in his voice; however, just as he offers a warm embrace, there is also a sense of vulnerability lingering in the confident vocals.
Melodically, ‘Idle Idol’ has the comfort and charm of a toe-tapping, smile-inducing, serene and sincere song, but simultaneously, an intense intimacy exists in its delicate unpicking of human emotion. Capturing the theme of disillusionment, Brian Fire explains:
“’Idle Idol’ is a shimmering indie-pop track when nostalgia meets disillusionment, when an old flame you once worshipped becomes a ghost of who they were… losing faith is someone you once adored. This song is for those who felt the unfortunate collapse of what once was.”
