Blindness & Light – Fly Paper (2025)
Musical influences often drive an artist’s sound, likening them to certain styles and sounds; however, Blindness & Light appear to flit between their influences and an originality that is distinctively Blindness & Light. As a group of musicians dotted across the globe, from the UK to Japan, their melodies showcase a diversity of cultures but, once again, come together in a harmonic unity. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Fly Paper’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Love Redacted’, ‘Your Solitude’ and ‘Letter To Future Generations’, Blindness & Light present ‘Fly Paper’. The first taster of their upcoming third album – set for release in 2026 – ‘Fly Paper’ shifts from 80s-tinged post-punk to the world of garage-punk.
A hard-hitting rush of music that can send you into a psychedelic sonic swirl with Colin M Potter’s soaring guitar shimmering alongside Rob Griffiths’ bass groove, and Glenn Welman banging it out on the drums. I imagine this to be one of the rockers played at a scene while everyone dances out, chilling with their hair blowing in the breeze. Yet, while the arrangement is grand, it is Henry Priestman’s Farfisa that stands out with a smile-inducing flair. Keeping all the sounds in line while adding a glittering sheen of creativity, Germany-based producers Benedikt Hain and Thomas Krottenthaler showcase their maturity and a bit of rambunctious rebelliousness in the single.
Fun and toe-tapping with a chilled-out 60s vibe, ‘Fly Paper’ is a song to lift your heart while swaying your hips. The thing is, while the track is engaging and entertaining, a more profound message adds weight to an already full-bodied song. Blindness & Light explain:
“This track toys with the metaphor of a dysfunctional relationship in which it’s hard to determine who’s the abused and who’s the abuser. Which one of us is using who? In reality, the analogy is an observation of political blocs and their dysfunctionality across the world; are we the fly or the fly paper? Often it’s hard to tell.”
