What Did You Expect? – Time (2026)
After years of pulsating and pounding drums in the background, the UK-based multi-instrumentalist Chris Goode takes a step from behind the kit, embracing a solo journey after so many years of being the drummer. Formed in 2018 from a “…desire to do and say more”, Goode takes centre stage with his blend of 21st-century punk music; a sound to “…tackle topics from social and political injustice to sexual identity and mental health… loud, heartfelt, and painfully sincere punk rock for these troubling times.” Six years, give or take, after releasing his 2020 single, ‘A.C.A.B.’, Goode releases another song as What Did You Expect?: ‘Time’.
Co-recorded and produced with Jake Stanton (mixing) and Tim Turan (mastering), ‘Time’ is a swift, brash grab by the naval-esque shove back to the world of Sum 41 and The Offspring. From the opening note, ‘Time’ is a sonic hurricane with pounding drums slicing across a bold bass, a scorching guitar, and the clips of an organ peeping in with shy glimpses. Head-spinning, whiplash-inducing, creative frenzy blusters in the sweep of sound; however, within its urgency, there is a subdued tempest-type attitude. Big, loud and mad, but contained in a sincere, fragile form.
While I am aware that each instrument, moment, and simple sonic expression is Chris Goode, it’s hard to believe there’s only one man behind the melody. Larger than life, ‘Time’ can be a little overwhelming and leaves you gasping for breath; yet, the mentioned sincerity makes the track something special. Delving deep into emotional connection – a glimpse at desire, yearning and, well, life – this flush of punk is oddly calming and smooth. Chris Goode explains:
“…the track captures the uneasy space between growing older and refusing to let go of the things that still matter. It’s a sharp, self-aware reflection on chasing creative dreams in a world that keeps telling you it’s too late.”
So, my opinion of Goode and his solo venture? Fascinating, blustery, and a true delight to make Thursday a little bit brighter. Then again, what did you expect?
