John Daniel – Otänkt Bra (2026)
With his energy and penchant for a good pop song, Daniel has established himself as a strong voice in Swedish pop with music that is intimate, innocent and sincere, while simultaneously grandiose and overwhelming. This is not our introduction to John Daniel, but he hasn’t graced our virtual pages for several years; so, here’s a nod to the most recent release from the Swedish star, ‘Otänkt Bra’.
His first step into 2026, John Daniel released ‘Otänkt Bra’ last month on Valentine’s Day. Aptly named and released on an apt date, the single is one about relationships – not necessarily complexities, but the core and spirit of romantic pairings. He explains: “The song is dedicated to my amazing girlfriend, but also to my bonus kids, the whole family really. We’ve been together for almost eight years now, so the turning point actually came a long time ago, but it’s now that I truly see how everything has fallen into place. Life had a different plan for me than the one I thought, and it turned out unexpectedly good.”
Simplistic in that it’s a song about something unexpectedly good and joyous, ‘Otänkt Bra’ is the quintessential love song; however, it stems from something far more intimate. Mentioning a mid-life crisis, ‘Otänkt Bra’ rises from a period of reflection, pondering, and understanding the significance of love in life; hence, a song about his family that, in Daniel’s words, “…made me feel even more clearly what really matters… and why it needed to be written now.”
Alright, meaning, concepts and inspiration aside, what is the melody actually like? Produced by Anders Berlin and mixed by Alar Suurna, ‘Otänkt Bra’ finds the sweet spot between soft, soothing, solid pop love songs and a charming soft rock ballad. On one hand, there is a sincere innocence floating in a fusion of guitars, drums, percussion and piano, washed in a gentle, delicate tone; on the other hand, the melody is powerful, forceful, and hits you between the eyes with its flash of warm, kaleidoscopic sound.
Confident and bold, but with a hidden vulnerability and intimacy, John Daniel unpicks priorities and the joyful exuberance of an unexpectedly good life in ‘Otänkt Bra’. With the promise of an upcoming album later this year, I am eager to hear more from this musician.
