A Chat with A Is For Atom (23.03.26)
After the release of ‘Out of the Blue’, we chat with A Is For Atom. He opens up about the emotional core behind the track, which captures the fragile moment when familiarity turns into something more. Blending personal reflection with universal themes, he explores songwriting, nostalgia, and the role of timing in relationships.
OSR: ‘Out of the Blue’ captures a very specific emotional turning point. When familiarity shifts into something more. What drew you to explore that moment in particular?
A Is For Atom: ‘Out of the Blue’ is a bit of a departure for me – it’s more direct than my usual songwriting. I was interested in that precise moment when a long-standing familiarity suddenly shifts into something deeper, and all the risk that comes with it. The song was loosely inspired by a college friend who put his feelings on the line with someone he’d known for years, but the outcome wasn’t what he had hoped for. I tend to write more abstractly, but with this track, I leaned into a more classic, universal love story and tried to capture that emotional turning point as honestly as possible.
OSR: Your songwriting often balances personal experience with broader, almost universal themes. How do you decide what to reveal and what to leave open for interpretation?
A Is For Atom: My goal is to create songs that feel personal but still leave room for the listener’s own perspective. I’m very melody-driven – I focus on musical intervals that carry emotion and vowel sounds that allow the melody to open up – so the lyrics tend to serve that feeling rather than over-defining it. That approach naturally creates openness, inviting people to connect with the song in their own way.
OSR: There’s a strong sense of nostalgia running through this single. How much of that is rooted in your own memories versus constructed storytelling?
A Is For Atom: There’s definitely a personal foundation to the nostalgia. I was reflecting a lot on my life before 2016, which now feels like a completely different chapter. At the same time, I was expecting the birth of my son, so there was a natural sense of looking back while stepping into something new. With A is for Atom, I don’t document those memories literally; I tend to reshape them through a more cinematic lens so they become something broader and more universal.
OSR: Sonically, the track feels restrained yet intentional. Can you talk about the production choices that helped shape its emotional tone?
A Is For Atom: We were definitely drawing from a ‘90s rock palette with this one, but filtered through a more minimal, modern lens. The goal was to keep things understated so the emotional core of the song could come through. Instead of building a dense arrangement, we made very deliberate choices about what to include and what to leave out using space, subtle guitar textures, and dynamics to create tension. That restraint helps the track feel more intimate, like it’s holding something just under the surface.
OSR: Your influences range from indie rock to more atmospheric acts like Air. How do you navigate blending those textures without losing your own identity?
A Is For Atom: I pull from a pretty wide range of influences, but I think the identity comes from how everything gets filtered through the same melodic and emotional lens. Whether it’s indie rock or more atmospheric textures, I’m not trying to recreate any one sound, it’s about taking elements from different places and using them in a way that serves the song. Over time, that blend starts to feel like its own thing.
OSR: The idea of timing, emotional and otherwise, feels central to this song. Do you think timing plays a larger role in relationships than we often admit?
A Is For Atom: I think timing plays a much bigger role in relationships than we like to admit. You can have a real connection with someone, but if you’re not aligned in that moment, emotionally or otherwise, it can completely change the outcome. That tension between something feeling right and not quite working is really at the heart of the song.
OSR: As the title track, how does ‘Out of the Blue’ function as a thematic anchor for the album as a whole?
A Is For Atom: A big theme across the album is anticipation and transition – how life can change suddenly in ways you can’t fully prepare for. I was thinking a lot about that while expecting my son, that feeling of something huge on the horizon. ‘Out of the Blue’ approaches that idea from a more personal, emotional angle, but it still carries that core theme of unexpected change. Even though it stands apart a bit, it felt like the right title because it captures the spirit of the whole record.
OSR: Many of your songs explore emotional distance and connection. Has your perspective on those ideas evolved over the course of making this record?
A Is For Atom: Yeah, I think as I’ve gotten older, my perspective has become more direct. I’m still drawn to themes of distance and connection, but I’m less interested in approaching them abstractly and more focused on getting to the emotional core. There’s a greater sense of honesty and immediacy in this record.
OSR: You’ve spoken about drawing from literature and myth. Are there any specific references that shaped this track or the wider album?
A Is For Atom: This track is mostly rooted in my own experiences. Across the album, I drew from real moments, relationships, transitions, and navigating change. Even when a song leans a little more symbolic, like ‘Upriver’, it’s still grounded in something personal. I’m always trying to take those real experiences and shape them into something more universal.
OSR: Looking back at your earlier work, where do you feel the most noticeable growth has occurred on ‘Out of the Blue’?
A Is For Atom: The biggest growth on ‘Out of the Blue’ is definitely in my vocals. I spent a lot of time working on my range, control, and overall technique – really understanding where my voice sits and how to use it more intentionally. I also focused on phrasing and dynamics, so the vocal could carry more of the emotional weight without forcing it.
