A Chat with Casey Louis (15.09.25)
Inspired by “risk-takers who leave a lasting mark…”, singer-songwriter Casey Louis offers audiences intimacy, connection, and a resonating sound that speaks to the heart, letting you know you aren’t alone. We speak with the US-based musician about his new album, The Secret Joke, upcoming plans, what music means to him and more.
OSR: Cliché, but why did you choose to become a musician? What drew you to music?
Louis: I grew up with my parents blasting music through the house, and it really feels like I had no choice but to accept my fate as a musically inclined individual. I’m so grateful for my parents introducing me to this world, as I can’t imagine my life any other way.
OSR: You recently released your album, The Secret Joke. What can you tell us about the album? Is there a particular theme or backstory?
Louis: The Secret Joke is filled with themes of self-discovery and identity, along with ideas of change. It’s an experience, not just a collection of songs, and attention rewards the listener.
OSR: What was the production of The Secret Joke like? Did you face any challenges, or were things pretty smooth sailing? What did you learn from producing the album?
Louis: Bokoven’s production on this album was key in making the story what it is. It was challenging to write and perform over these unconventional instrumentals, but it ended in something I believe to be truly authentic and original.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Louis: As a whole? Music is everything. It’s the one language we all speak, and the one medium everybody can enjoy. It’s everything.
OSR: Which do you find more challenging: melody or lyrics?
Louis: Melody has always come naturally to me. The lyrics are where I find myself going back and forth, and reaching down the deepest.
OSR: What do you hope people take from The Secret Joke, and what do you take from it?
Louis: I hope people can listen and form their own interpretations. No one is wrong, and no one is correct. Whatever this album makes you feel is truly opinion-based, and I hope you take the time to find out what it means to you.
OSR: If you had to introduce a new listener to your music, which song would you choose and why that one?
Louis: I’d show them ‘Don’t Fall Asleep’. If you can make it through the highs and lows of that 6-minute song, you are a perfect candidate for an enjoyer of my music.
OSR: If you could change anything about The Secret Joke, what would it be?
Louis: Maybe not the answer you were looking for, but honestly, I wouldn’t. I can’t wait to look back on this work 5, 10 years from now, and highlight the imperfections. It is truly authentic to where I am currently as an artist, and in its own way, that’s what makes it perfect as is.
OSR: What’s next for Casey Louis?
Louis: I’ve got another album I’m about 90% done with. It’s even bigger, emotional, and gripping than this one. I’ve always got something up my sleeve.
OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?
Louis: It’s great to finally meet you, and I hope our paths continue to intersect. Hope to see you soon.
