A Chat with Cheyanne Summer (27.05.25)

Daubing her musical palette with blues, country, pop, and soul styles, Cheyanne Summer paints those sonic landscapes with a kaleidoscopic brush and a heart-warming smile. Known for moving melodies and enthusiasm, the Canada-based musician lays her soul bare and connects with poetic lyricism – something we all need nowadays. We speak about Summer about her debut EP, We’ve Got Time’, genres, collaboration and more.

OSR: Cliché, but what drew you to music? What made you decide to pursue a music career?

Summer: For as long as I could remember I have always been drawn to music and singing. However, it wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I was able to take a step back from the fast pace of life and realize the opportunity I was given. We weren’t able to leave the house, so why not make music? Why not go off the deep end and throw yourself at something you once thought was unattainable! And so I did! I realized this is an opportunity to pursue my dreams while the rest of the world seems to be put on pause and I haven’t looked back since. Music was something I had always wanted to pursue but never knew how to.

OSR: You recently released your debut EP, We’ve Got Time. What can you tell us about the album? Is there a particular theme or backstory?

Summer: We’ve Got Time is a quirky EP that plays on different themes such as mental health, growing up, and honesty. I started writing some of the songs on the EP back in early 2022, but it wasn’t until I wrote ‘Do You Love Me?’ that I realized we had a 4 song project on our hands. From there it was all about figuring out what we wanted this album to be and how we wanted to present it to the world. As a child I loved the movie Grease, so as you are listening to the project you will be able to hear the influences that movie had on my songwriting and singing. All in all this EP is meant to be a fun doo-wop meets country project that’s easy to listen too but holds a lot of depth within the lyrics!

OSR: What was it like creating the EP from penning to production? Did you have any challenges, and if so, how did you overcome them?

Summer: Being involved with every aspect of the EP, from writing to composition to production, makes it more personable. At least to me. I feel like a piece of my soul went into this project and I am very proud of it. It was something that I needed to release to be able to grow even more as an artist and be able to make the next steps in my career, and it’s a little peek into the fun / free-spirited side of me that I don’t always show. Before I would just write the lyrics, but being involved with the production makes the project even more personable and made me connect with it on a different level. There are always going to be challenges when it comes to making music, but most of it is my own internal struggles as an artist that I need to work through!

OSR: What do you hope people take from your music, and what do you take from it?

Summer: I hope people are able to get lost in my music and have some sort of emotional release. Whether that be anger, sadness or happiness, music is about feeling something! Knowing that someone has resonated with my music is the biggest accomplishment (I feel) as a musician.

OSR: Your music is a blend of country, rock and blues. Why do you feel the mixture of different genres is important instead of keeping to a “tried and tested” traditional approach?

Summer: Keeping a “tried and tested” traditional approach wouldn’t be Cheyanne Summer. I have spent years going through artist development (and still developing) and understanding what I like and don’t like in my music to get the sound that I have. I don’t like to put myself in a box so why limit my music to one?

OSR: If you could collaborate with any musician, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Summer: I would love to collaborate with Eminem. I have always been a fan of his work and it would be a dream of mine to do a song with him. I’ve always wanted to do a singing cover of ‘Without Me’.

OSR: What advice do you have for upcoming artists?

Summer: Get some spreadsheets started with contacts so that when you have released music you aren’t trying to find everyone that you’ve connected with, it’s all in one giant spreadsheet. Be persistent but don’t bug. Go out to different events and meet new people, and finally just be true to who you are. People will naturally gravitate to that.

OSR: If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which would you choose and why?

Summer: I would tell them to listen to ‘Do You Love Me?’ first just because I think it’s the most fun and upbeat song on the project and I think it’s an easy concept that everyone can relate to in some way or another. My other songs on the project, although upbeat and fun, have a bit more depth to them.

OSR: What can we expect from you in the future?

Summer: In the near future you can expect at least another single before 2025 comes to an end. In early 2026 I will release another single off of my debut album, which I am aiming to release in the summer of 2026!

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Summer: Believe in yourself. Get creative!  Follow your dreams and not what everyone expects of you, you only have one life so you may as well enjoy what you are doing!
