A Chat with Flaming June (17.12.21)

The solo project of singer-songwriter Louise Eatock, Flaming June offers a unique blend of folk meets indie-rock. We speak with Flaming June about her new album Hope In A Jar, self-production, phobias and future plans.

OSR: What drew you to music?

Flaming June: I always remember music being around from songs on the radio, records being played and my parents singing. My grandfather also had a piano so I just started playing music.

OSR: What is the backstory to your album Hope In A Jar?

Flaming June: Hope In A Jar is a collection of songs from the last few years ranging from folk songs to more indie-rock. Some tell true stories from history and others tell stories from my life.

OSR: Did you face any challenges with the recording and production process?

Flaming June: This is the first time I have recorded and produced music so I spent hours learning how to use a DAW and plugins. I really enjoyed it and I liked the fact that I could spend as many hours as I needed to on it.

OSR: Do you have a musical background?

Flaming June: I learned the piano as a child up to Grade 5 but I am mainly self-taught.

OSR: What do you hope people take from Hope In A Jar?

Flaming June: I think the album covers a range of emotions and subjects but I hope that the album is ultimately hopeful.

OSR: Do you have a favourite track from Hope In A Jar?

Flaming June: I think I would say ‘You Will Find Your Way Home’ as it is influenced by my daughters.

OSR: If you could change anything about the album, what would it be?

Flaming June: I am always really critical of the music I have recorded. I think I would have liked to add a few more textures or melodies in places to some of the songs.

OSR: Do you have any phobias?

Flaming June: No.

OSR: What do you think is the best way to discover new music?

Flaming June: I read festival line-ups and then listen to bands I’ve not heard of. I also listen to independent radio and have found some good music there.

OSR: If you were on a desert island and could take three things, what would they be? No phones or boats are allowed.

Flaming June: My dog and my children.

OSR: Do you have future plans as Flaming June?

Flaming June: I still enjoy writing songs and I am getting more interested in music production and technology, so I am looking forward to experimenting in the studio again. I have learned that you can’t rush these things, so I am happy to see where it all leads.
