A Chat with Milyssa Rose (22.10.25)

Daubing her sonic palette with various colours of different genres, ranging from pop, hip hop, rock, blues and soul, Milyssa Rose paints the world with a kaleidoscopic swoop of… well, it’s not your average swoop. We speak with the singer-songwriter about her single ‘Reason’, what music means to her, opening for Faith Evans, and much more.

OSR: One of your strengths as a musician is your versatility and range of genres. Do you feel this is significant as an artist, and why or why not? Moreover, how would you describe your music in a single sentence?

Rose: Being versatile allows me to grow and explore different facets of my artistry. Some people find it challenging to categorize my work, believing it doesn’t align with a specific brand. I consider myself to be “genre-bending”, and this approach works well for me. I don’t want to be confined to just one lane.

OSR: After a bit of a break, you return to the “land of music” with your single, ‘Reason’. Why the slight hiatus?

Rose: I’ve been working on cover songs requested by my fans, including tracks by Joan Jett, Ozzy Osbourne, and Prof. I also took a break from my own music to collaborate on some projects with my artist friends.

OSR: What can you tell us about your new single? Is there are particular theme or backstory to it?

Rose: It’s a nod to 90s pop-punk – fast, loud, and full of heart. Inspired by bands like NOFX and Tilt, it’s my way of keeping that spirit alive.

OSR: As a genre-diverse artist, do you feel ‘Reason’ is a good representation of you at the moment?

Rose: I’ve always loved rock, but never really brought it into my own catalog, until now. Felt like the right time to dive in and explore that side of me. It’s loud, raw, and a whole lot of fun.

OSR: What do you hope people take from ‘Reason’?

Rose: It’s got that throwback feel — like when a song takes you right back to being a teenager dealing with messy love and big emotions. Total nostalgia vibes.

OSR: What do you take from ‘Reason’?

Rose: I totally relived my youth with this one. It’s like I’m back in the passenger seat, blasting music with my crew, stuffing our faces with Taco Bell, and texting on a flip phone like it’s peak technology. Pure 2000s chaos, and I’m loving every second of it.

OSR: You’ve shared the stage with numerous artists, including Faith Evans, Mykko Montana and many others. Which is your most memorable performance, and why is it memorable?

Rose: Opening for Faith Evans at Sweet Auburn Fest was wild. It’s such a legendary festival, and sharing the stage with an icon like her felt totally surreal. Definitely one of those “did that really happen?” moments.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Rose: It is my therapy. Without it, I would not be well.

OSR: Which do you find more challenging: the lyrics or the melody?

Rose: Melodies. I want them to be catchy, hit you in the soul, make you feel some kind of way.

OSR: What can we expect from you in the future?

Rose: More genre-bending hits!!!

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Rose: Thank you for listening and showing love. The fact that anyone wants to learn, support, and ride with me means everything. I’m just a woman chasing the dream and trying to make it.
