A Chat with Tasmin Archer (15.09.25)

Interview with Jay Lowe (guest contributor)

In July, singer-songwriter Tasmin Archer graced our pages with an interview pre-album release. Today, she graces our pages again post-album release. We speak with Tasmin about her new album, A Cauldron Of Random Notes, and much more.

What has the response been to ‘Vibration Of Life’?

Tasmin: It seems to have been very well received. I’ve had lots of very positive comments, and no negative ones, thankfully.

Have you enjoyed doing promotion again?

Tasmin: It’s tiring and takes time away from my creative exploits. But I love chatting about our music, so in that regard, yes.

Favourite track from A Cauldron Of Random Notes?

Tasmin: I don’t really have a favourite track, I like them all for different reasons. They all spark something in me.

Segregation seeds grow in the darkness / in the light they turn to weeds” – expand on that stunning lyric?

Tasmin: The song is loosely about divide and conquer, and those who manipulate things in that regard often work from the shadows. Being aware of those tactics diminishes their effect, and shining a light on them helps to raise awareness.

Have you been starstruck meeting a fellow musician?

Tasmin: I can’t recall being starstruck as such; I just appreciate and admire their gifts.

What’s the best thing about Bradford?

Tasmin: I don’t visit Bradford much these days, but when I grew up there, I enjoyed the cultural diversity. I wrote a foreword for a recent book titled Bradford, Eh? by Jason Croot, which details his personal journey through Bradford in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It’s a great insight into Bradford during those decades, if anybody’s interested.

What was it like performing on The Word?

Tasmin: That was a long time ago! And we did so much TV back then that they all blend into one. They were always a bit stressful, but the presenters and crew were always very helpful. The Word felt more fast-paced and a little bit more edgy than most TV shows at the time. It was a great experience, as were all the TV shows that we did back then.

Football team you support?

Tasmin: Sunderland! How? I was indoctrinated by my partner John, who’s from the Durham area. We had season tickets for many years. But time restraints started to limit our attendance, so we gave those up, and only go to matches now and again these days. Still follow closely though, and I’m still an ambassador for the club’s charity, The Foundation Of Light. They do great work tackling the North East’s social challenges, helping underprivileged people in the community live happier and healthy lives.

Do you have a favourite 80s album?

Tasmin: I used to listen to a lot of Stevie Wonder back in the 80s, and I was always trying to polish my own vocal technique by listening to him. So for that reason, I’ll choose Hotter Than July.

Best advice you’ve received in your career?

Tasmin: Just be yourself.
