Aging Disgracefully – Black Stockings (2025)
While never truly an era-specific social issue, ageism has plagued humanity for centuries. Consider this: the young are allowed their innocence, while the old should have learned from experience. No bright lights and promises for those in the latter years of life; it’s all about being in the now for the younger generation. Singer-songwriters Karen Pyra (vocals) and Mike Elliot (guitar and vocals) object, denying the balloon of ageism and delicately unpicking its intricacies with passionate zeal. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Black Stockings’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Red Sky’ and ‘Cheatin’, ‘Black Stockings’ keeps the momentum going for the Canada-based pair. Produced by Darrel Cameron, the track brims with vintage blues from the 70s and 80s – think Eric Clapton-esque guitars with the sensuality and power of Bessie Smith’s vocals. Of course, these comparisons are merely insights into the core of Aging Disgracefully’s blues-centric sound; they by no means should be labelled. Truthfully, drawing on the blues greats, but with a hint of their own intoxicating sound, Aging Disgracefully brings the best of yesteryear to modern-day society.
A combination of steady drums, a soulful guitar, and a saxophone adding extra sexiness to ‘Black Stockings’, Aging Disgracefully offer an anthem to those burlesque moments of passion. Consider the scene: dimmed lights, candles flickering in the background, each individual looking at the other with dishonourable intent, a leg on the silk sheets, a lift of the satin slip, and black stockings pulled off only to be delicately tossed to the floor… need I go on?
Refusing to accept that romance, lust, and the heat of an amorous encounter are reserved for the young, the band explains:
“We refuse to accept the idea that romance and sensuality belong only to the young. ‘Black Stockings’ is a love letter to those who have spent a lifetime together and still find ways to ignite the fire. It’s for every couple who knows that passion is a choice – one that gets richer with time.”
