Alex Cherney and The Brothers Nylon (ft Lenny McFly) – Pool Party (2025)
Spanning throughout the realms of folk, reggae, indie, soul and disco, singer-songwriter Alex Cherney is a self-described “genre-agnostic songwriter with vintage production”. Influenced by the likes of the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye, it’s safe to say that somewhere in the blossoming of his genre-diverse sound, there is a funky groove and toe-tapping vibe to keep you chilling out with a smile on your face. When not creating music, the US-based musician embraces a visual aesthetic, directing and producing films and commercials. Today, we take our first look at Alex Cherney jumping headfirst into his single, ‘Pool Party’.
Often collaborating with The Brothers Nylon (also known as Nick and Mike Rufolo), Cherney and the brothers experiment with the Long Island twins’ “no limitations for Lofi beats…” and Cherney’s eclectic swirl of funk and soul. Taken from their collaborative album, Pool Party, the title track is a drag back to the 1970s/1980s disco era – think a mixture of The Beach Boys, Buck Cherry, and Earth, Wind and Fire. Yet, as much as there are the groovy rhythms of Philip Bailey’s funky falsetto with honey-soaked flair, there is a kick of rap/hip-hop sensibilities bringing a contemporary edginess to the track.
One aspect I find intriguing about the single is not how it introduces listeners to a kaleidoscopic party where you swirl about without any cares, it’s how the track flows directly into the second track of the album… and you don’t even notice the change. Alex Cherney and The Brothers Nylon carefully construct the 21-track Pool Party as the highs and lows of the upbeat, soul-stirring, that’s one hell of a party vibes of yesteryear. You lose yourself entirely, and the single ‘Pool Party’ is the introduction to something kaleidoscopically elegant with a cheeky wink and quick kiss on the cheek.
Overall, I highly recommend listening to ‘Pool Party’, but take a gander at the full album to fully enjoy everything Cherney and The Brothers Nylon have to offer.
