Anniee – Wearing Black (2025)

Upon finding a world of synth-pop and synthwave soundscapes, with its community of producers and enthusiasts, singer-songwriter Anne Eisendrath delved into a sonic project as Anniee. Creating a world where moody synths meet retro beats, her music has enthralled listeners and turned heads since 2021. Known for songs that “…dive into a symbolic world where the subconscious comes out to play”, the US-based artist is one of those who has you twirling about in an ethereal haze with fairies flitting about you in its cinematic world.  Join us as we jump into her track, ‘Wearing Black’.

The opening track of her debut EP, Night School – an EP Anniee describes as “…a collection of songs born from a turning point in my life… when I felt forsaken, and the only thing left to do was sing to the stars… 5 synth-pop anthems that explore the night in all its pain and glory…” – ‘Wearing Black’ dictates the elements of that personal, intimate transformation.

Penned, recorded and produced by Anniee, with co-production by Von Hertzog, ‘Wearing Black’ has a retro vibe to the synth-laden tune; however, as much as you are dragged back to the 90s, Anniee injects a contemporary beat with modern vocals, transcending eras with a well-entwined weave of music. As with the other tracks on Night School, ‘Wearing Black’ is an immersive power that makes the song not only a hearing experience, but a vivid, intoxicating capture of the senses.

When listening to ‘Wearing Black’, I found myself gliding along a kaleidoscopic sonic wave with shimmering lights, bringing a sense of warmth and calm – kind of like the waves characters ride in anime. Tranquil and serene, the synths both lift your heart and have an airier groove, but also clutch with a somewhat odd sense of vulnerability. Anniee’s tender, honey-drenched vocals enhance the lightness and sweetness of the track, so there’s no need to cry but only smile.

Victor Hugo’s quote, “What makes night within us may leave stars”, inspired Anniee’s EP, Night School. For me, ‘Wearing Black’ is a shimmering expression of those stars.
