Aryel Moon – Little Bit Closer (2025)
Is grunge gone? Did it disappear, never to return to the stylings of Nirvana, Hole, and Soundgarden? Well, not really. The iconic themes of feminism, idealism, anti-authoritarianism, non-binary perspectives, and ultimately, an introspective glance at existential authenticity continue to thrive. Being true to yourself without all that external BS. So, grunge’s ideals are still very much alive; the resurrection is staring us in the face. Drawing on the likes of Courtney Love and Shirley Manson, Irish foursome Aryel Moon adds their name to the “…female-led grunge resurrection”.
Centred around the Italian-born musician, Donatella Camedda, Aryel Moon’s songs begin as a flutter on her acoustic guitar, then, being brought to the band, the tracks find themselves maturing with unique vibes and expression. Joined by Lucas Masi (electric guitar), Stefano Vita (bass), and Nando Alonso (drums), Dublin’s Aryel Moon is quickly earning a reputation for powerful performances on the live circuit; however, their studio releases are as raw, evocative and engaging. Following their well-received singles, ‘Bluebell’ and ‘Eulogy’, the group release ‘Little Bit Closer’.
Adopting a DIY approach – the authenticity oozes from the single – ‘Little Bit Closer’ was penned by Camedda and produced by Stefano Vita. Dragging us back to the 90s grunge scene, it breathes life into the nostalgic sounds of Hole, Garbage and Nirvana. A combination of bold bass, insistent drums, and a scorching guitar comes together in the duality of symphonic unity and individual distortion. It’s like ripping the band-aid off a wound, then tending it with loving care.
A song that seems apathetic and melancholy, ‘Little Bit Closer’ might appear as a vulnerable package of doom and gloom with a sonic vodka chaser, but it’s not all that desperate. A song to describe the “honeymoon phase” of romance – the lingering of butterflies, grins, and rose-tinted glasses – ‘Little Bit Closer’ catches the phase of desire, anticipation, and adrenaline where “…you’re caught between genuine connection and the rush of limerence.”
In addition to the single, Aryel Moon released an official music video for ‘Little Bit Closer’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
