Ava Valianti – Sophomore Slump (2026)

Finding that sweet spot between indie-pop and folk-pop, singer-songwriter Ava Valianti made her way into our ears and our hearts in 2025. Sauntering through realms of folk and pop, there was a Lizzy McAlpine meets Gracie Abrams charm to Valianti’s music; then she took a turn. Heavier, messier and somewhat darker, the US-based musician released ’ Deep Fuchsia ’ in 2026. As if doing a pivot, her lighter indie pieces made way for a pop-rock whirl showcasing a more mature side to Valianti. Today, we delve into her discography to hear the most recent release, ‘Sophomore Slump’.

Transcending her sweet smile and innocent eyes, Valianti is a young musician who is entirely unafraid to latch onto those things in life that even the most mature and well-seasoned individual doesn’t like to touch. With ‘Sophomore Slump’, her brutally honest pen and heartfelt voice tapped at feelings of inadequacy, vulnerability, despair and fragility with raw, delicate intimacy. She explains:

“I wrote ‘Sophomore Slump’ in a moment where everything felt way too loud and way too fragile at the same time. It’s about that weird in-between space where you’re trying really hard, still dreaming big, but everything keeps slipping just out of reach. I was feeling embarrassed, overwhelmed, and kind of lost, crying in front of people I wished I had it together for. The song is me admitting that I don’t have it figured out yet, but I’m still moving forward anyway. Everything and nothing feels so important, and I’m learning how to sit inside that without breaking.”

Lyrically and thematically, ‘Sophomore Slump’ is a timeless coming-of-age anthem speaking to the experiences of various generations; however, melodically, the tune is a quick drag back to the pop-rock tones of the late 90s and early 2000s. With ‘Sophomore Slump’, I could place Ava Valianti alongside the likes of Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow. Yet, while there is a comparison, Valianti is carving her initials on the pop-rock scene and will quickly become an established figure in her own right. Highly recommended.
