Baby Said – BS (2025)

At 20 minutes 18 seconds, Portsmouth-based sibling duo Baby Said had me hooked with their new album BS. With all the qualities of any great rock act tied up in a nice pop package, there was little room for error.

Opening with ‘Sweet Talk’, the quality on display was evident instantly with note-perfect vocals. Their delivery is smooth yet raw, full of emotion and passion. It had me nodding along from start to finish, and by the second listen, I was singing along, all the hallmarks of a solid pop song. Next came ‘Mean Girls’ showcasing a more funky side, keeping up the energy. This also showcases a lyrical talent for delivering a message about social status and being comfortable in your own skin. Blitzing straight into ‘123’ with an opening riff which you’d be forgiven for being reminded of the classic ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, which again just helps deliver a rich rock sound.

Hitting the midpoint of the record, they offer a nice palate cleanser with the more tranquil ‘Burn’, which helps show another facet to the sisters’ repertoire. With some beautiful harmonies, it just reinforces the talent of Veronica and Jess; it is not surprising that their musical journey started from a young age, with them both picking up guitars at 6 and 4 years old respectively. After hearing Jess was drawn to the bass after seeing Maneskin perform, the inspiration is clearly audible in their sound.

Next come arguably my 3 favourite tracks on the album, of which I cannot choose. ‘Hate Me’, the new single ‘Dead to Me’ and the closing track ‘Take Everything’, all leaning it a clear punk element with a clear vibe of bands such as Soft Play and Panic Shack. I feel like I’d just be repeating myself, highlighting all their qualities. Vocally switching between beautiful harmonies and a more aggressive spoken work style has created a unique sound for this Italian/Punjabi duo. When paired with their pure rock sound, they really are one to watch.

Having just finished a tour with James and the Cold Gun, I’m gutted I missed it. I’m hoping for more dates to be announced, as it’s clear this is a band that must be seen live! Until then, BS will be getting played a lot in my house, as we are all hooked.
