Ben Aubergine – Spoke For What I Knew (2025)
Brimming with excitement, anticipation, and an eagerness to express oneself creatively with passionate zeal and original melodies, Ben Aubergine spent his “…teens and twenties chasing expression through songs crafted with instinct and emotion”, then life kicks in. With changing priorities, responsibilities and an eagerness to pursue stability and growth, Aubergine became a physician, husband and father; but beneath the noble progression, embers of music simmered like a “…creative anchor” Now, a couple of decades after life intervened, those musical embers are stoked, a fire resumed, and Aubergine is holding to that spark.
Penned in 1998, subtly changed over the past twenty-odd years, and released almost 30 years after its composition, Ben Aubergine brings us his debut single, ‘Spoke For What I Knew’.
Self-recorded and produced in his home studio, with mastering by Ruben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles, Aubergine walks along the line of indie-rock with a touch of power-pop clinging to the sonic wrapper. Performing all of the instruments and vocals himself, ‘Spoke For What I Knew’ is a concoction of bold drums, a rhythmic bass, and soaring guitars set in a soothing, silvery shine of sound. Interestingly, while the song has a harmonic quality, blips of vulnerability and fragility linger, seen particularly in the heavier, gruffer, but still subdued vocals.
Easy to listen to, but with tremulous tragedy shifting in the song, ‘Spoke For What I Knew’ has a weighty juxtaposition between toe-tapping and haunting. Unpicking the complexities of human connection, Aubergine delves into the intricate realm of relationships. He explains:
“… ‘Spoke For What I Knew’ explores the fragile space between two people when emotions are misaligned – where a moment of intimate honesty creates irresolvable tension. It’s a song about relational asymmetry, and how sometimes separation is the only way out… A song about fragile connection, smothering tension, and the quiet collapse that follows.”
In addition to the single, Ben Aubergine released an official music video for ‘Spoke For What I Knew’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel.
