Inspired by life in its totality, singer-songwriter Ashley Wolfe (the person behind Blind Man’s Daughter) unpicks humanity with a soaring voice and loving arms. Showcasing another side to her multi-faceted personality, ‘Quiet Love & Bullets Lie’ is a shift from the piano-driven ballad ‘Empty (Stripped), which itself was a shift from the heavier indie-rock ‘Coma’. Self-recorded and produced, ‘Quiet Love & Bullets Lie’ offers a sophisticated fusion of shimmering synths and bold beats in a kaleidoscopic arc of alternative pop. Think of travelling across a multi-coloured river carried by a shimmering sonic rainbow and lifting you in a bubble of soul-stirring sound – this is pretty much the vivid imagery felt in ‘Quiet Love & Bullet Lies’.
A mature and well-arranged production, Wolfe keeps the happiness and mish-mash tranquillity of ‘Quiet Love & Bullets Lie’ in check. Yet, amidst the vibrant breaths of music lies a wash of vulnerability capturing the fear, confusion and anxiety of the theme. Wolfe explains:
“Years ago, things were pretty out of control. One night I got a call… I remember the night I heard the shot; I was far away. Too far to see, too far to stop it. All I had were the words someone told me, the sound that I heard, and the silence that followed. For years, I carried that grief, believing the person I had once loved was gone forever. ‘Quiet Love’ is about that moment, about love you can’t save, about the lies we live with, and about the things you never think you’ll have to survive…”
