Christian Cohle – Oh It Must Be Nice (2025)

Should you take a fancy to Nick Cave, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry or Future Islands, the chances are you’ll be intrigued by singer-songwriter Christian Cohle. Combining the flair of Bowie with the raw confessional nature of Cave and the style of Brian Ferry, this Irish artist boldly walks in a realm of art-rock bound by a sheen of avant-pop attitudes. Join us as we delve into his most recent single, ‘Oh It Must Be Nice’.

Following his 2023 album, WETLANDS – an album brimming with eclectic, genre-diverse tracks – Cohle drags audiences back to the 1980s with a pop-inspired ballad in ‘Oh It Must Be Nice’. Produced with Michael Heffernan, the single oscillates between the smoothness of an acoustic piano and pulsating beats piercing the background. A shimmer of synths ripples across, giving a sparkle to ‘Oh It Must Be Nice’; however, and this furthers the duality, Cohle’s vocals twirl with sincerity and brim with raw, painful vulnerability.

An immersive single, ‘Oh It Must Be Nice’ is the sonic river that ebbs and flows with a glance of smile-inducing charm, then the starkness of bare bones emotion. Evocative and intimate, Cohle holds out his hand with confidence, but shirks back in fear and self-doubt. It’s powerful and painful, and this is most likely based on the weighty theme. Cohle explains:

“I wrote ‘Oh It Must Be Nice’ after a phone call with an old friend who had found a new partner. I was overcome with happiness for them, yet alongside that joy came a sense of forlorn loneliness for myself and a sharp clarity about where I was in my own life. The song is a confessional – I speak to my exhaustion, my frustrations with my career, my self-doubt, and my struggles with sex, addiction, and empty cul-de-sac intimacies.”
