Dead Storm Rising – 11 Ton Butterfly (2025)

A band choosing anonymity to “…focus on the music and not the members…”, Dead Storm Rising is a studio-only project drawing together the talents of Raze (lead vocals), Kitsune (vocals, keys and strings), and Wraith (guitars, bass and drums). Already having crossed our ears with their debut single, ‘Leo’, we are not strangers to the US-based trio; however, the lads might have fallen along the wayside with their metal sound. As I turn on my speakers, press play on the band’s Spotify, and wait for whatever they have to offer, I quickly remember the group’s brooding, dark, introspective blend of metal-inspired tones. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ’11 Ton Butterfly’.

Following the well-received hard rock meets melodic single ‘Leo’, listening to ’11 Ton Butterfly’ is like being set off on a silvery sonic river with the moon shining down on its glistening, glassy surface. With an eager grin and pounding heart, you head off, carried across the ripples by a comfortable boat, unaware of the tumultuous waves yet to come.

Produced by Wraith with mixing and mastering by Stephan Hawkes, the melody oscillates between soothing sophistication and rugged vulnerability. Drawing together crashing drums, a bold bass, and soaring guitars, the sonic boat rocks violently; however, an anchor exists in the tune, allowing you to ride the crashing waves but with surety that you won’t lose yourself entirely.

Despite having the metal-driven volatility of Dead Storm Rising’s dark, introspective sound, ’11 Ton Butterfly’ is not an original song but rather a tribute to the Mindfunk single. For me, there is a similarity in the darkness of the singles; then again, the scintillating melodic metal makes Dead Storm Rising’s cover a unique, eclectic, completely new twist of the original.

A contribution to French record label Bitume Prods’ Mindfunk tribute compilation, Dropped from the Sky: A tribute to Mindfunk, this version of ’11 Ton Butterfly’ is melodically and lyrically moving. Dead Storm Rising explains: We unveil ’11 Ton Butterfly’, a harrowing reinterpretation of the Mindfunk original. This track delves into emotional collapse, self-destruction, and the quiet permanence of loss…”
