DrewJam – Friends with a Fool (2025)

The brainchild of UK-based singer-songwriter Andrew James Knox, DrewJam is a solo project combining sincerely classical with poignant contemporary sounds. With classical training in piano and guitar, symphonic structure is evident in DrewJam’s music, and his strong vocals up the ante. Yet, it is the reflective lyricism and “rhythmic, catchy tunes” that resonate with listeners on a deeper level. If you don’t know who DrewJam is, don’t worry, we’re also late to the party; join us as we delve into his most recent release, ‘Friends with a Fool’.

Following his well-received single ‘Sweetest Desires’, ‘Friends with a Fool’ is a wistful combination of classic rock, pop-rock, indie-rock, and a charming hint of soul. Noting inspirations like Sting, REM and Mark Knopfler, ‘Friends with a Fool’ is a nostalgic drag back to the 1980s and 1990s rock world; however, as with most aspects of the track, there is a modern-day allure with shimmers of Kings of Leon clinging to ‘Friends with a Fool’.

Mostly self-produced, DrewJam offers a melodic blending of acoustic and electronic styles in a weighty sonic haze. Soaring solos of acoustic and electronic guitars bring the old-school rock sound, while ambient organs and a playful piano keep a kaleidoscopic undertone sparkling with delight. Melodically, a fascinating rush of music easily seduces listeners with enchanting, soul-stirring tones; however, it is the lyricism that brings depth to the single. DrewJam explains:

“The song wistfully explores the emotions that many of us face when friends and loved ones are influenced to make choices and take paths, whether because of infatuation, love, a relationship that we believe is wrong.”

Soothing, languid and mellifluous, ‘Friends with a Fool’ brings tranquil sincerity, while the poetic lyricism adds a more poignant influence. For me, however, it is not the smooth instruments or bold words that make the song – it is the combination of the two executed by DrewJam. Upping the ante, he holds our hands with his sophisticated voice, but there is a hint of vulnerability and rawness intricately infusing maturity with fragility.
