Fiona Amaka – Desert Flower (2026)
With ‘Desert Flower’, London-based artist Fiona Amaka is helping us push through January blues. Collaborating with David Taro, Amaka has produced a wonderful track with all the familiarity of an old favourite but with the exhilaration of a new and unique take on the tried-and-tested indie troupe.
Amaka’s vocals take centre stage on ‘Desert Flower’ – rich and warm, really complementing the lyrics. I loved how it tackles parental feelings and how our kids are our world; it’s not over-complicated, it’s just a solid pop song that has you singing along after the first listen. Another massive draw for me is how Amaka’s voice has such a nostalgic feel to it. This track could easily appear on any 90s movie soundtrack.
‘Desert Flower’ is only elevated by David Taro’s contribution with a subtle yet powerful performance on guitar, tying the track together. The experience of these two great artists is clearly apparent, with a level of professionalism in their performance, and it is clear Amaka especially has unwavering confidence in her own ability and rightly so! I don’t think I can fault her at all on this track. I’ll reiterate that this truly is a masterclass in songwriting and performing.
With this in mind, I can only imagine what a treat catching one of Amaka’s shows would be; her music is clearly something that needs to be heard live. Having spent a lot of 2025 playing shows around the big smoke, I can’t think of a better place to hone your craft, and it leaves me hoping that she will venture further in 2026, because I think as many people as possible should be introduced to this great musician.
I don’t think I can say much more about ‘Desert Flower’ other than it’s a song that can fit into any great indie playlist. With this in mind, I had to go and explore Amaka’s other works. Over the last three years, she has been busy and produced some absolutely phenomenal music, which will keep me busy for a while, I think. It all left me hoping that an album or EP is on the horizon for this great artist.
