Freya Magee – Duplicity (2025)
The Covid pandemic lockdowns brought about fear, panic, and many ill-fated things; however, they also sparked creativity, reflection, and personal insight among many people. Today, we take a gander at one of those who picked up a guitar, started making music, and found solace in the melodies she wrote, played, and performed. Today, we take a look and listen to the upcoming singer-songwriter Freya Magee.
With her roots in Australia and Northern Ireland, but a heart in England – London to be specific – Freya Magee draws together several cultures, experiences, and influences in her music. Truth be told, she has only one single to date; however, a few months after being “discovered” at a dinner party, she began working with industry professionals and performing at local pubs, quickly etching her name into the indie-folk scene.
Recorded and produced by Phil Taylor at Laurel Sound Studios, Magee’s debut single ‘Duplicity’ is exactly what it says on the tin: filled with duplicity. Delicate and soothing, a wistful brush of mellifluous music rushes past your head; the gentle calm quickly sets your soul at ease. Yet, entwined with the easy comes the complex.
Charming and cool, Magee’s delicate vocals are sincere but simultaneously haunting. Warmth and joy flutter from beneath, but a siren-like quality brings melancholy and vulnerability. Not only is this in her vocals – a sign of reflection, insight, and raw honesty – but also in the melody, which dives, dips, and daubs upbeat, toe-tapping indie-folk with hard-hitting, weighty indie-rock. The bold drums, soaring guitars and dynamic bass oscillate between tranquil sincerity and heavier rock intonations.
A rollercoaster of emotions and sounds, Magee captures the yin and yang elements in humanity, delicately unpicking it. She explains:
“It’s about the ache of wanting to live every version of your life at once. ‘Duplicity’ is what plays when you’re driving away from something, then slowly realising you’re also driving toward something.”
