Glass Cabin – I Don’t Know (2025)
The names of musicians Jess Brown and Dave Flint are new to my ears, but they are by no means new to global audiences. Hailing from the USA, Brown and Flint have an astounding portfolio between them, ranging from Brown writing hit songs for Almo/Universal and EMI, and Flint signing with Warner Bros Records as part of Billy Montana and the Longshots. Flint’s extensive touring and Brown’s songs on over 25 million records – including Grammy and CMA-nominated records – present veteran experiences that come together in Glass Cabin. The latest addition to the duo’s discography is the single ‘I Don’t Know’.
Following the well-received single ‘That’s What Love Can Do’, Glass Cabin takes a second step in 2025 with the self-produced ‘I Don’t Know’. As with ‘That’s What Love Can Do’, ‘I Don’t Know’ leans toward the band’s distinctive Americana meets roots-rock sound. Soft, soothing, and gentle, Flint’s instrumentation lays a mellifluous foundation for Brown’s grittier vocals. Oddly, while there is a smoothness to the single in its guitar-driven tone, ‘I Don’t Know’ also brims with rough, raw vulnerability; a skin-tingling despair slicing through the warmer, comforting rock-filled base.
An immersive experience, listening to ‘I Don’t Know’ sees you lost in a hazy sonic forest surrounded by dark trees and haunting eyes you see behind the brush. Soulful and confident, but fragile and gruff, the melody veils joviality with murkier tragedy. Yet, intrepid and resilient, Brown and Flint bring a sense of “well, this is how it is” in a rush of classic rock.
As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Glass Cabin, and for me at least, it is a bit of an odd listen. Not in the sense of avant-garde experimentalism, rather bringing a nostalgic wave of the 90s sad rock ballads in its melody.
So, what is my overall opinion of ‘I Don’t Know’? Weighty, powerful, and like placing a heavy stone on your chest, the track uses its profoundness to tug at your heartstrings and leave you a little tearful. Until Glass Cabin release their anticipated new album later this year, I’ll have ‘I Don’t Know’ (and the rest of their discography) on repeat.
