J Terrell – Golden Hour (2025)

Growing up surrounded by music, singer-songwriter J Terrell embraced his passion for the art early on – “all the way up into and past my school years”, he shares in our interview with him. Inspired by a person’s experience of music, he also mentioned what music means to him: “Music is the stream alongside the path we have to walk, you can stop to be refreshed or to reflect, but you can also see where you’ve been and where you might go.” Known for his uplifting music, although there are deeper and profound pieces to his catalogue, J Terrell brings a dash of sunshine to dreary days or enhances the joy of a happy moment.

While the US-based Terrell is turning heads with original material, he was originally known for his covers and karaoke, so he’s meeting his traditional fanbase’s request for a cover or two. Not only a cover to enjoy, but also reflecting “…some of my musical direction following my album, Cowboy Tango…”, Terrell brings us his version of the Kacey Musgraves single, ‘Golden Hour’.

Now, I’ll admit, I hadn’t a clue who Kacey Musgraves is before listening to Terrell’s cover of ‘Golden Hour’; this wasn’t a bad introduction. Bound in sweet pop flavours, the original is a toe-tapping tune perfectly capturing the heart of a love song. A country-influenced guitar adds a bit of weight to the track – otherwise, a lovely tune to while the time away thinking of your sweetheart. Did J Terrell meet the standard?

In my opinion, the cover is pretty much the same as the original – the only difference is the male vocals instead of female. Truth be told, a flutter of neo-soul slices through with Terrell’s honey-drenched vocals, and this adds a certain slickness not evident in Musgraves’ version.

So, once again, did he meet the standard? Well, I think so. Terrell doesn’t deviate too greatly from Musgraves’ version, so you can recognise the song to sing along. No twist or turn or unique shine in the cover, but that’s perfectly fine. I’m certain everyone who loves the original will be happy with this version.
