Jack Devlin – Skin In The Game (2025)
Quickly being dubbed as the Irish Sam Fender, singer-songwriter Jack Devlin saunters across the realm of indie-rock, indie-folk and a sneaky tap into the world of soul, all creating an exquisite sonic bouquet. We came across Jack Devlin with his single ‘Default Days’ – a tune brimming with the charm of innocent joy and warmth, yet it held a poignant tale of intimate depth. Today, we take a gander at his new single, ‘Skin In The Game’, eager to discover if this track is as passionate, profound and intriguing. Join us, won’t you?
Following the critically acclaimed ‘Default Days’, ‘Skin In The Game’ blurs the line between intimate folk and powerful indie-rock. In a rush of music, it is an immediate hit between the eyes with a warm thrust of guitars and drums. As if you were standing before a wind tunnel, then having a massive breath of air blowing through you – yes, not past you but through you – leaving you slightly ruffled but also excited with its invigorating sensation. Well, that’s the melodic force of ‘Skin In The Game’.
Oddly enough, Devlin’s vocals seem to be clinging to the outside, an almost entirely separate track. Subdued and veiled, Devlin’s raw vocals slip along the melody peeping from the background; however, despite its echoed presence, the whispering hush is prominent, tender and demands attention in its own little way.
I find this texturing of sounds very clever and interesting, as it so eloquently captures the heart of the personal narrative and theme. A whisper locked in the urgency of a great challenge; a sliver of silvery light grappling with desperation. Devlin explains:
“This is about my life and growing up with deep family problems, and my mum trying her best to hold everything together. It’s basically me telling her that I need her and that I’m also here for her at the same time. For the average listener, I think it’s a song of hope – a helping hand when times are hard. It could also be about losing someone close.”
