Jemma Johnson – Good Guy (2025)
Willing to delve into those grittier areas of life – inner turmoil, conflict, toxicity – Jemma Johnson offers comfort, solace, catharsis, and intimate relatability to audiences. With over a decade in the music industry, the UK-based musician has not only established herself as a natural storyteller and musician but also an engaging, enthusiastic performer. Her confident stage presence has graced stages at UK festivals such as Y-Not and Tramlines, as well as France’s MiCannes Festival. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Good Guy’.
Following her well-received single ‘Obsessed’, ‘Good Guy’ adopts a strong contemporary pop sound, making it perfect for any Pop Music Playlist. Now, I’m not the greatest modern-day pop fan, but even I had my toe tapping, head bopping, and started getting into the chilled-out groove with ‘Good Guy’. Co-produced with Thomas Bacon and Andy Gatford, the track oozes charm, soothing, laidback layers of electronic pop; however, the bold synths and pulsating beats give the track a bit of a bite, making ‘Good Guy’ not too smooth, but not too spicy.
A song made for festivals, ‘Good Guy’ is melodically a sophisticated track to get the crowd dancing and singing along to the chorus. Truthfully, Jemma Johnson’s rich yet husky vocals stick in your head, and you’ll find yourself humming along to ‘Good Guy’ without even knowing it. Yet, as much as Johnson’s warm voice seemingly caresses you with a smile and a wink, there is a darker element to the track lingering both in word and sound.
We all know about people who “play up to the crowd”, presenting themselves as one thing while, in reality, having the totally opposite personality – ‘Good Guy’ is all about this toxic duality. With an intimate narrative, Johnson falls in love with the good guy seeing something fantastic in that life… and then the shit hits the fan. She sees the other side of the coin, finds out about the player, and discovers his disingenuousness. In her obscure vocals, she shares how she sees beyond the veil, is aware of the artificiality, and feels empowered to leave this shattered illusion.
