Jess Young – Heartbreak Vacation (2025)
If you take a shine to the likes of Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks and Dua Lipa, the chances are you’ll quite enjoy Jess Young. With the power of Cyrus but the rawness of Nicks, the Irish singer-songwriter embraces the realm of pop with open arms, catching every pink bubble; however, as much as she celebrates the joy of pop, she also explores the grittier, darker, more desperate themes in this sonic universe. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Heartbreak Vacation’.
Self-described as someone who “gets my heart broken all the time but then I rally and write songs about it…”, Jess Young dips into the complexity of relationships with a flair of passionate emotion. When it comes to ‘Heartbreak Vacation’, Young uses her penchant for storytelling to sing about a tale as old as time, and true as it can be. No, this isn’t Beauty and the Beast, it’s all about that “girl meets boy, girl recognises the boy is a player, girl realises it’s too late and she’s in love and can’t get herself unstuck from him…” It sucks, but it happens. This is when ‘Heartbreak Vacation’ takes control.
Following her 2024 single ‘Bad Boys’, ‘Heartbreak Vacation’ drips with the bounce and pulsating beats of a modern-day pop single. It’s toe-tapping and infectious in the lines of Lady Gaga, but there is a timelessness lingering in the track with a retro indie-pop tone. Penned and produced with Mezz and emerging pop star Michaela, ‘Heartbreak Vacation’ has elegance and sophistication while retaining youthful innocence. It’s not brash or raw, but Young’s vocals insert a sense of vulnerability to the track.
So, overall, what is my opinion of Jess Young and ‘Heartbreak Vacation’? With a sun-drenched twirl about in the sunlight, ‘Heartbreak Vacation’ is a breath of fresh air in the murky water of relationship toxicity. Jess Young, however, is more than just that one breath of refreshing air as she astounds us again and again with her moving voice. This is my introduction to Young, and I cannot wait to hear more from the talented musician.
