Junior – Mo Money (2025)
Whenever I read that an artist was born after the year 2000, it makes me feel old. I become one of those people who say, “back in my day” – something I never thought I’d do; however, the skills of today’s youth have a certain flair to bind vintage with contemporary for modern audiences. The brainchild of 21-year-old rapper, songwriter and producer Shivam Patnaik, Junior is an artist who drags the best of Kanye to our ears with his own boom-bap stance. Join us as we delve into his single ‘Mo Money’.
Following his single ‘Flyest City’, Junior teams up with solar on the single ‘Mo Money’. Dragging us back to the golden era of boom-bap, the new track dips into 90s rap, but with the soulful incline we expect of acts like Kanye West, Notorious B.I.G., and Nas. Toe-tapping and head-nodding, it’s impossible to listen to ‘Mo Money’ without moving your head and feeling the hip-hop vibes. I’m not a fan of rap, hip-hop or boom-bap, but this weave of gritty but soulful music is something I find quite entertaining.
While the melodic union of brash beats, chopped synths, and hard-hitting drums is impressive, it is the flow of Junior’s warm, rich vocals that gives ‘Mo Money’ a cooling, soothing and inviting tinge. Moreover, while the song is bold and confident, there is no arrogance or abruptness in it at all. It’s easy on the ears, and given its motivational message of hard work and drive, ‘Mo Money’ is a song of gentle encouragement and not something focusing just on getting the cash. I am eager to hear more from Junior and suggest you keep an eye on him as well.
In addition to the single, Junior released a visualiser for ‘Mo Money’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel. Please note this video uses lighting effects that can trigger migraines and/or seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
