Katie Belle – People Pleaser (2025)
Infusing high-powered electronic pop with edgier indie-pop and a wash of synths, singer-songwriter Katie Belle brings soulful, hard-hitting, intimate, and edgy intrigue through her tender yet forceful vocals. Celebrating life with her music – both the bad and good bits – the US-based musician holds a quiet power in her complex tunes, but still fills your heart with a brazen blast of energetic glory. We came across Belle a few years back with her 2021 release, ‘Daughter’ – an indie-pop piece of heartbreak, pain, redemption and strength. Today, we enter 2026 with her new single, ‘People Pleaser’.
Produced by Fabio Campedelli, Anto Soder and Amish Mech, with mastering by Sanjeevi Easwar and mixing by Lukas Cuman, ‘People Pleaser’ is one of those songs that don’t quite fit in the pop genre, don’t quite sit in the electro-pop sphere, and isn’t quite suited to the synth-pop world – it’s a layer of each in a well-textured sweep of music. Forceful and bold, but tranquil and smooth, ‘People Pleaser’ appeals to all fans of pop music, and can probably convert a couple who might be sceptical about the genre.
Melodically, ‘People Pleaser’ pulsates with a bold beat washed by shimmering synths in a kaleidoscopic haze of charm and sophisticated elegance. However, a bass guitar adds an indie vibe, slipping something darker, rawer, and rougher into the track. Interestingly, while the melody is easy on the ears, it is Belle’s vocals that up the ante. Whispery and breathless, her soprano dances across the tune, unpicking the complexities of human vulnerability and anxiety.
Sonically, it’s a treat, but lyrically, it gains weight. Lines like: “I was starved for validation/ I thought I just wanted to please/ I could be the perfect daughter/ by the skin of my teeth” capture the fearfulness of imperfection and shackles of being perfect. Yet, as dark as the track may be, it also brings a sense of empowerment and hope to listeners with lines like: “No more/ People pleaser/ Sweet demeanour/ I’m gonna save me all for myself… I break the curse/ I’m no longer bound.”
