Kelsie Kimberlin – Champ (2026)

Released on the 24th of February, 2026 – the fourth anniversary of the Ukraine war – Kelsie Kimberlin’s ‘Champ’ met audiences with its profound, poignant message. In all honesty, it’s unbelievable that this war began four years ago and, sadly, there seems to be no end in sight. To encourage recognition and awareness of the strife, as well as celebrate the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people, singer-songwriter Kelsie Kimberlin has released numerous songs, a film, and promotes the significance of on-the-ground activism.

Following her well-received singles ‘Dream of Peace’ and ‘Unfinished Chapters’, ‘Champ’ continues to touch on the dream of peace amidst the suffering of a war-torn country; however, it taps into a more specific tale of living with war. Focusing on the effect that participation in sports can have to help maintain a sense of normality, ‘Champ’ touches on the viral moment of 16-year-old Ukrainian karate champion, Mariia Hnes, whose father serves in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. She won an award in Italy, then chose to walk away from the podium before a group photograph was taken of her and a Russian athlete – an act that became a moment of pride for her country. Kelsie explains:

“I have seen how stressful it is for Ukrainian children to live a normal life while their parents are fighting an enemy who wants to destroy them and their way of life. Participation in sports helps these kids who have a sense of purpose and direction, and brings pride to their warrior parents.”

A song that could be considered one of those inspiring tunes for Rocky Balboa, celebrating his endurance and pushing him to reach the next rung on the ladder, ‘Champ’ is heavy, gritty and powerful in its alt-rock sound. Pulsating drums pump in the background, while a bold bass and guitars slash across in glittering lights. Kimberlin’s vocals act as the encouraging friend pressing your progression while celebrating your resilience and hopeful endurance. Interestingly, the track is heavy and brash – a little dull and stomping – but there is optimistic lightness celebrating empowerment, courage and dignity.
