Lavendine – Who Cares If I’m Alone (2025)
Many children find themselves in the church choir, singing hymns in exaltation with music in their hearts and hope floating on butterfly wings across the room – or field if you find yourself attending an open-air mass. This was the path of Jacy and Jana Ayers when, at only four years old, they embraced the power of music with passionate zeal; it was the light at the end of the path that they knew was their destiny. Skip ahead some years into adulthood, and we find the Ayers sisters sharing their music as the US-based duo Lavendine.
Following the well-received singles ‘Waterless Cloud’ and ‘Diamonds In The Sky’, ‘Who Cares If I’m Alone’ shifts further toward a heavier rock vibe as compared to previous indie material. Produced with renowned professional Mark Needham, ‘Who Cares If I’m Alone’ combines a soaring guitar, bold bass and dynamic drumbeat that seems to wriggle in your ear and rattle about your cranium before clutching your heart and taking your breath away. Clipping of 90s/2000s rock, there is a vintage feel to the song – particularly with the guitar solos – yet, a contemporary edginess makes the song familiar but fresh.
Unafraid to celebrate both the grittier tragedy and optimistic triumph in life, Lavendine unpick the complexities of self-worth, identity, and the challenges facing people in an uncertain reality. Drawing from personal experiences of significant health challenges – Jana’s diagnosis of a tumour near her brainstem resulting in 80% hearing loss in one ear, and Jacy’s multiple surgeries, including one for an ectopic pregnancy – the duo are no strangers to difficulties. Yet, from suffering and pain, they find resilience, strength and empowerment – the message they want to share with audiences. Enter the single, ‘Who Cares If I’m Alone’.
“This track is one of our personal favourites because it captures the essence of our journey – the pursuit of our calling, even if it means walking the road alone… When we were writing this song, we were in a lonely place after so many hurdles and disappointments. But somehow, it birthed a knowing that we weren’t going to stop, even if it was just her and I standing at the finish line of our calling and destiny…” – Lavendine on ‘Who Cares If I’m Alone’
